UNDERSTANDING THE TRANSITION
Perimenopause vs. Menopause: What’s the Difference?
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. During this time, hormone levels fluctuate, and you may notice changes in your periods, hot flashes, or other symptoms. You can still have periods—and become pregnant—during perimenopause.
Natural menopause is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, when there is no other explanation. The years afterward are called postmenopause. You don’t need to wait until your periods stop to seek care for symptoms that affect your daily life.
SYMPTOMS & CONCERNS
Common Perimenopause & Menopause Symptoms
It’s not always hot flashes. Perimenopause and menopause may bring changes in sleep, mood, concentration, sexual health, and physical comfort. Along with night sweats and changing periods, symptoms can include anxiety, irritability, low mood, brain fog, fatigue, joint aches, worsening headaches or migraines, palpitations, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and reduced sexual desire. Urinary leakage, recurrent urinary tract infections, weight changes, and changes in skin or hair are also concerns worth discussing.
You may find yourself seeking medical care more often for several seemingly unrelated concerns—without realizing the menopause transition could be part of the picture. These symptoms deserve attention, but they should not automatically be attributed to hormones. Dr. Kashi reviews your symptoms, menstrual history, and overall health, considers other possible causes, and works alongside your primary care provider to develop an individualized care plan.
PERSONALIZED CARE
Perimenopause & Menopause Treatment Options
Treatment starts with understanding what matters most to you. Depending on your symptoms, medical history, and preferences, your care plan may include hormone therapy when appropriate, nonhormonal treatments, and guidance on sleep, nutrition, movement, and sexual health. Dr. Kashi will discuss the potential benefits, risks, and alternatives so you can make an informed decision.
Your plan may also address concerns about weight, muscle strength, bone health, and metabolic health. Follow-up visits provide time to review your response and adjust care as needed. Consultations and follow-ups are virtual throughout Florida, with in-person procedures available in Winter Park.
